FAIRFIELD, CONN. (April 19, 2014)—The Sacred Heart softball team dropped two to Fairleigh Dickinson Saturday afternoon. SHU managed just 10 hits on the day as they fell 2-1 and 6-1 to the Knights. The pair of losses drops the Pioneers to 12-21 on the season and just 1-11 in Northeast Conference play.
The Pioneers got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. After back-to-back singles for Kelyn Fillmore and Kate Nadler (Southbury, Conn.) to lead-off the inning, FDU starting pitcher Megan Reiner got the next two batters to swing at the third strike. With two down, freshman Andrea Sidor (North Vancouver, British Columbia) smacked a single to center field driving in the Pioneers' only run of the game.
Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.) pitched all eight innings of game one, only allowing seven hits over eight innings of work. Holding the Knights scoreless through five innings, a SHU fielding error allowed the tying run.
In the top of the eighth, after allowing a single to the leadoff batter, Carlson gave up an RBI triple to Alex Portesi for the game-winning run.
Adrianna Mallory (Pine Bush, N.Y.) took the circle in the second game and held FDU scoreless through four innings, but in the top of the fifth the Knights broke the game wide open and scored four unearned runs; enough to win the game.
Mallory allowed all six runs, but only one was earned, throughout her seven innings. The sophomore leftie game up nine hits and struck out one batter.
Sacred Heart is back in action Monday afternoon as they host Army in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
