FAIRFIELD, CONN. (March 27, 2014)—The Sacred Heart softball team defeated cross-town rival Fairfield in walk-off fashion Thursday afternoon at Pioneer Park. With the winning run on second base, freshman Victoria D'Addario (Lincoln Park, N.Y.) drove the ball into the gap in right center allowing classmate Andrea Sidor (North Vancouver, British Columbia) to round the bases to home. The Pioneers improve to 9-8 on the season before opening Northeast Conference play this weekend against Central Connecticut State on Saturday and LIU Brooklyn on Sunday.
Sacred Heart got on the board first in the second inning when McKenna Weigand (Gilbert, Ariz.), who was 2-for3, drove in Kate Nadler (Southbury, Conn.) after she led off with a double.
But the Stags tied it in the top of the third. With two outs, Kristen Felicia ripped a triple to the right field corner, allowing her to easily score on Sammy Ruffalo's infield single.
Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) came in to pitch in the fourth inning, relieving SHU starter Adrianna Mallory (Pine Bush, N.Y.), and allowed Fairfield just one hit over two innings of work. Meanwhile, Stags pitchers silenced Pioneer bats through three innings.
Rookie pitcher Jamie Carlson took the circle in the sixth inning. After getting lead-off batter to line out to second base, she walked the go-ahead run. She struck out the No. 3 batter, but gave up an RBI double to clean-up hitter Sam Frungillo.
Carlson ended up with the win improving her season record to 2-4.
