Softball Downs Temple in Eight Innings, Falls to Akron

WINTER HAVEN, FL (March 7, 2014)—The Sacred Heart softball team split Friday falling to Akron 3-1 and defeating Temple 3-2 in eight innings. The Pioneers move to an even 4-4 on the season.

Annie Dreher (Saugus, Calif.) went 1-4 in the day's first game and picked up the Pioneers' lone RBI. In the top of the sixth with one out, Jade Bowins (Frederick, Md.) reached on a walk before Dreher drilled a double to left centerfield allowing the speedy centerfielder to score.

Rookie pitcher Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.) fell to 1-3 this season getting the loss after pitching all six innings. After holding the Zips scoreless through 3 1/3 innings, Carlson gave up four singles and a sacrifice fly to five consecutive batters resulting in two runs. The freshman gave up a total of three earned runs on seven hits and struck out two in the loss.

Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) earned her second win of the year striking out seven in the eight-inning 3-2 win over Temple. The junior only gave up one earned run in the extra inning game on six hits. After striking out the side in the sixth, Wentworth worked out of a bases loaded, no outs jam in the seventh. After striking out Temple's No. 3 batter, she got the No. 4 hitter to ground into a double-play.

Wentworth helped her cause on both ends going 3-for-3 at the plate with a sacrifice bunt. The Pioneers scored two runs in the fourth with Robillard and freshman secondbaseman Andrea Sidor (North Vancouver, British Columbia) knocking them in.

Justine Sibthorp (Santa Clarita, Calif.) scored the winning run in the eighth thanks to McKenna Weigand (Gilbert, Ariz.) driving her home.

Sacred Heart faces Saint Peter's and Utah Valley tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.
