FAIRFIELD, CT (November 6, 2003) - The Sacred Heart University women's soccer team, the #2 seed in the upcoming Northeast Conference Tournament, placed two players on the All-NEC first team and one on the second team announced Thursday afternoon.
Senior goalkeeper Leslie Konsig (Millburn, NJ/Millburn), the 2001 NEC Tournament MVP, makes her fourth consecutive appearance on the all-conference squad, after having been named second team as a freshman and first team every other year. Konsig leads the NEC in goals against average (0.63), save percentage (.902), saves per game (5.94) and shutouts (10), while ranking second in overall saves (101). Senior midfielder Paula Pineda (Vigo, Spain/La Guia) also joins Konsig as a four-time honoree after having been named to the all-NEC second team at midfield in 2000 and the all-NEC first team at forward in 2001 and 2002. Pineda tied for the team lead in goals with five this season, including four game-winning scores. She also had an assist to rank second on the team in points with 11. Earning a spot on the second team was freshman Karin Olsson (Stockholm, Sweden). Olsson anchored the Pioneers defense all season, holding opponents to just 0.62 goals per game.
The Pioneers will face Long Island in the opening round of the 2003 NEC Tournament Friday afternoon. The Pioneers are the #2 seed and will face the #3 seeded Blackbirds at 1:30 pm in the second game of the day. The #1 seeded and defending champion Central Connecticut Blue Devils will face #4 seeded Monmouth in the opening game of the day at 11:00 am. If the Pioneers advance, the will face the winner of the CCSU and Monmouth game.
