Women's Soccer Announces 2009 Recruiting Class

May 4, 2009

FAIRFIELD, CT - Sacred Heart women's soccer coach Kim Banner announced today the addition of 11 players committed to the Pioneers for the upcoming 2009 season.

Included in the recruiting class are a half dozen players from New York, led by Ashley Moore of Levittown. A tall, strong forward who plays for the Commack Blasters, Moore should bring some offensive fire power to the SHU frontline.

Elizabeth Stewart of Seaford and Lauren Boccio of Dix Hills, teammmates of Moore on the Blasters, will also be joining the Pioneers. Stewart is a very versatile player and Coach Banner looks for her to bring stability to the midfield. Boccio will join the back line and has excellent speed.

Rounding out the New York contingent are Mikeala Wolf of Northport, Kathy Gualotuna of Queens Village, and Emily Rokitowski from Wappingers Falls. Wolf is another speedy forward with excellent one-on-one moves and should help give the Pioneers an additional scoring threat. Gualotuna comes from one of the top programs on Long Island and will be a strong defender. Rokitowski is a solid back and should provide some stability on defense as well.

Also joining the Pioneers will be Jen Mulvey of Manalapan, NJ. A strong offensive threat, Banner considers Mulvey a work horse that will be a solid player in the midfield. Fellow Garden State resident, Mia Gardner from Essex Falls ,NJ, will also start her collegiate career with the Pioneers. A technical and crafty player, according to Banner, Gardner can help either up front or in the midfield.

Lia Palmacci of Groton, MA and the FC Stars of Massachussets is a powerful defender that Banner hopes will raise the level of play on the back line.

Banner is also pleased about the addition of Sydney Judkins from South Park, PA, an all-section and all WPIAL all star goalkeeper. One of the top netminders in the State of PA, Judkins will provide some much-needed depth in goal.

The Pioneers have also added All-American forward Stephanie Whitten from Waterville, ME. A very intense and powerful forward, Banner expects her to be able to make an instant contribution on offense.

"We are extremely pleased about this incoming class joining us this fall," says Banner. "Each player will bring the right balance of strength and athleticism that we will need to succeed."

The 2009 season kicks off on August 28 at home against LaSalle at 4:00 p.m.
