Women's Soccer Tripped Up By Monmouth, 2-0
Oct. 30, 2009
Fairfield, CT - Junior Mary Wilks scored twice in the second half for the Monmouth Hawks as they defeated the Sacred Heart women's soccer team 2-0 Friday night. The loss officially eliminated the Pioneers in the race for the final spot in the 2009 Northeast Conference tournament. Lia Fierro made four saves for the Hawks to keep the Pioneers off the scoreboard. Sacred Heart goaltender Meghan Reichelt (Selden, NY) made three saves in the loss.
Sacred Heart (7-9-1, 3-5-1 NEC) had the best opportunity to score in the first half on a through ball to Samantha Kee (Haskell, NJ). The sophomore forward could not control the long pass as Fierro came forward to take the ball off her foot. The Pioneers would have another good chance to score with 4:00 remaining in the period on a free kick from 20 yards out. Ashley Testani's (Monroe, CT) service would just miss the crowd of heads in the box as the game went into the intermission scoreless.
Monmouth (12-4-1, 8-1-1 NEC) nearly pulled ahead eight minutes into the second half as Jackie Grodotzke rang a shot off the crossbar from 25 yards out. Kee had another quality scoring chance at the 24 minute mark, finding space at the top of the 18 yard box but her one touch shot was stopped by Fierro. Fierro would take the game for the Hawks as she scored two unassisted markers with 15:42 and 9:50 on the clock.
Sacred Heart returns to action for its season finale Sunday November 1 at Campus Field. Senior Day festivities will take place before kick off, game time is set for noon.
