Sacred Heart Women's Soccer Loses Season Finale, 1-0, at LIU
Oct. 30, 2005
BROOKLYN, NY (October 30, 2005) - The Sacred Heart women's soccer team rounded out the 2005 regular season Sunday afternoon falling at Long Island, 1-0. The Pioneers will now direct their attention to the Northeast Conference Tournament slated for next Friday and Sunday afternoons at defending champion Central Connecticut State University.
After a scoreless first half this afternoon, LIU's Meghann McCormick found the back of the net for the fourth time this season. Junior Selima Berisha played the ball back to the senior midfielder, who slid a low shot just inside the right goal post for the game-winner. It was McCormick's second game-winning goal this season.
Senior Fab Rezayat anchored a stifling Blackbirds defense that limited the Pioneers to three shots on the match. Stephanie Kansky recorded two saves in goal as she notched her second consecutive shutout and third this season.
SHU's Ashley Mocarski (Stratford, CT) made one save in taking the loss for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers, who earned the #4 seed, will have a familiar tournament opponent to face in the opening round as the square off with the host Blue Devils. SHU and CCSU have faced each other in each of the last three NEC tournaments, the last two in the title game, with the Blue Devils winning each meeting. Central finished a perfect 9-0-0 in the NEC to earn the top-seed while the Pioneers come in at 5-3-1 to fall one point shy of the #3 seeded St. Francis (PA) Red Flash. The Long Island Blackbirds round out the field at #2 (7-1-1).
