STATEN ISLAND, NY (October 28, 2005) - The Sacred Heart women's soccer team posted a 4-1 win at Wagner College Friday afternoon and coupled with a 1-0 loss by Fairleigh Dickinson at Long Island, the Pioneers have qualified for next weekend's Northeast Conference Tournament. The Pioneers entered the day tied with Fairleigh Dickinson for fourth place with two games to play. SHU beat FDU, 3-1, earlier in the year, holding the tie breaker. The Pioneers run their streak to five-straight years with a spot in the league tournament, a league high mark.
The Pioneers too control of the game in the first half, scoring three times in the first 45 minutes. Junior Lisa Burbige (Babylon, NY) got the Pioneers started off by scoring on a put back which slid through the goalie's hands. Fellow junior Leslie Morales (Cortlandt Manor, NY) padded the Pioneers' lead by adding two back to back goals in the 34th and 35th minutes.
Morales' first goal came on a feed from freshman Britney Dupee (Portland, ME) who sent a through ball into the 15-yard mark where she blasted a shot into the left corner. Morales's second score came unassisted from 13 yards out on the left side.
Wagner answered with a goal in the 55th minute by freshman Brianna Victorio scoring her first career goal on a ten yard loft shot assisted by senior Betty Ann Rogers.
Sacred Heart added a final goal in the 78th minute with senior Orlagh Cullen's (Offlay, Ireland) 33 yard direct kick that flew over the goalie and found the top back of the netting. The Pioneers held a 17-9 shot advantage, while Wagner led in corner kicks 3-2.
The Pioneers are now 8-8-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the NEC while the Seahawks are now 2-12-2 overall and 2-5-1 NEC. SHU will close out the regular season on Sunday at Long Island, a team just ahead of them in the NEC standings in second.
