HAMDEN, Conn. (October 22, 2006) - Sacred Heart freshman Stina Flodin (Stockholm, Sweden) set up a pair of goals as the Pioneers posted a 2-0 win over Quinnipiac Sunday afternoon on the road keeping their Northeast Conference Tournament hopes alive heading into the next weekend's regular season finale.
The win lifts SHU to 3-3-1 in the NEC (4-12-1 overall) and gives them 10 points in the conference standings, leaving them one point behind Saint Francis (11) in fourth place, a team they will face next weekend at home. The loss drops the Bobcats to 8-5-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the league.
After a scoreless first half, Sacred Heart's Lisa Burbige (Babylon, NY) broke the tie just over four minutes into the second stanza. Burbidge took a Flodin cross from the left side and pushed it past Quinnipiac keeper Sarah Lusto from the top of the 18 yard box into the bottom left corner of the net.
Flodin created another goal with just 49 seconds to play as she beat Lusto to a ball along the left sideline and sent a cross to fellow freshman Christina Soave (Stamford, CT). Soave then beat a streaking Lusto, who couldn't get back into position in time. The shot sailed into the top right corner of the net.
Senior Ashley Mocarski (Stratford, CT) (4-12-1) made six saves to garner her third shutout of the season.
The Bobcats edged the Pioneers in shots, 12-11, while also holding the advantage in corner kicks, 6-2.
Sacred Heart closes out the regular season next weekend hosting the Red Flash on Friday, October 27th at 3 pm followed by Robert Morris on Sunday, October 29th at 12 noon.
