FAIRFIELD, CT (October 20, 2005) - The Sacred Heart women's soccer team, on the strength of three first half goals, snapped a four-game winless streak Friday afternoon, beating Mount St. Mary's 3-1 in Northeast Conference play. The Pioneers came into the day in a four way tie for fourth place in the league standings and now improve to 6-8-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the NEC with the win. The Mount remains winless in the league at 0-4-2 while falling to 4-8-3 overall.
Sacred Heart struck first in the early going, getting on the scoreboard at 12:41 on a perfectly executed corner kick. Senior midfielder Orlagh Cullen (Offlay, Ireland) blasted a high curving ball that spun its way perfectly to a wide open Lisa Nowakowski right in front of the goal. Nowakowski, back after missing the last six games with injury, calmly headed the pinpoint pass into the empty net for her second goal of the season. Cullen, who was tied for the league lead in assists coming into the game, picked up her eight assist on the year.
The Pioneer offense would strike again in the 24th minute when the senior one-two punch of Erica Rico (Cranston, RI) and Katie Leahy (Warwick, RI) struck for a 2-0 lead. Rico popped a lob pass into the air that headed toward Leahy who collected the ball and blasted a rocket past Mount goalie Anna Lebo into the left corner.
Mount St. Mary's answered quickly, lighting the scoreboard themselves just 1:01 later. Sophomore Kellie Devine held the ball on the right sideline and sent a perfect crossing pass that fellow sophomore Jenn Baker was able to coral right in front of the left post. Baker quickly let her shot go and despite SHU keeper Ashley Mocarski (Stratford, CT) best effort to get a piece of the ball she had enough on it to sneak it into the left corner.
SHU put the finishing touches on the scoring in the 32nd minute when junior Leslie Morales (Cortlandt Manor, NY) used her speed to set up the third Pioneer tally. Junior Lisa Burbige (Babylon, NY) played a perfect through ball through the Mount defense and with three defenders ahead of her, Morales sprinted past all three to run onto the pass and set up a one-on-one with the keeper. Lebo came out of goal to try and make a play but Morales' shot was off her foot and into the back of the net before she could get there to give the Pioneers the 3-1 advantage.
Sacred Heart held the advantage for the remainder of the first half and the entire second half, limiting the Mount to just four more shots after their goal. The Pioneers out shot Mount St. Mary's, 17-5, overall in the match. Mocarski needed to make just two saves on the afternoon to earn the win. Lebo made five saves in taking the loss.
The Pioneers will host Monmouth this Sunday, October 23rd at 1:00 pm. Sunday will be "Senior Day" with seniors Leahy, Rico, Cullen and Meghan Sullivan (Windham, NH) being honored before the game.
