FAIRFIELD, CT (October 17, 2003) - Central Connecticut's Jessica McCavangh notched her sixth goal of the season to break a scoreless tie just over four minutes into overtime and give the Blue Devils a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart University on Campus Field, Friday afternoon. The loss is the first for the Pioneers in the Northeast Conference this year and their first at home since October 12, 2001, when the fell 1-0 to Monmouth in overtime.
Both teams came out slowly offensively in the first half, with each side recording just two shots apiece. The Blue Devils, however, were firing on all cylinders in the second half, keeping the pressure on senior goalkeeper Leslie Konsig (Millburn, NJ) and the Pioneer defense. CCSU recorded 10 shots in the period and forced Konsig to turn away six shots to keep the game scoreless. Defending Northeast Conference Player of the Year Kelly Shimmin threatened to send the Pioneers home in regulation when she blasted a shot from about 15 yards out off the left post.
Shimmin wouldn't be denied twice as she once again made her presence felt in the overtime. The junior forward line-up a 25-yard free kick and blasted a shot toward the goal where McCavangh was waiting to quickly get her foot on it and flick it toward the left corner and off a SHU defender to beat Konsig for the winning goal. The win extends Central's unbeaten streak to 13 games while improving to 12-1-2 overall and a conference best 6-0-1 to stay atop the league standings.
The Pioneers had there best chance to score in the 62nd minute of play when Sacred Heart was awarded a penalty kick after a Central player was called for a hand ball inside the box. Sacred Heart junior Jasmine Urbas (Pickering, Ontario) took her time setting the attempt but fired her shot wide left of the goal.

With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 6-4-3 overall and 4-1-1 in the Northeast Conference and return to action on Sunday afternoon when the travel to Long Island for a 1 pm match.
