Fairfield, CT - The Sacred Heart women's soccer team fell 3-1 to the Bryant Bulldogs Friday night in Smithfield, RI. The Pioneers outshot the Bulldogs 12-4 in the second half and 18-9 overall in the loss. Bryant scored three unanswered goals before Sacred Heart found the back of the net on an Ashley Moore (Levittown, NY) marker. Jennifer Harding notched two goals and Sarah Donovan had two assists for the Bulldogs.
Bryant (3-9-0, 1-4-0 NEC) tallied the first goal with 10:37 to play in the first half, capitalizing on a fortunate bounce. The ball deflected off of an SHU defender to Harding who ripped the ball past Sacred Heart goalie Meghan Reichelt (Selden, NY).
Sacred Heart (6-7-1, 2-3-1 NEC) controlled the action in the second half holding a distinct advantage in shots and forcing Bryant to foul nine times. But the Bulldogs extended their lead just four minutes into the second half on an Alex DiPippo header from a corner kick taken by Donovan. Donovan provided another assist in the 62nd minute as Harding beat the defense to give Bryant a 3-0 lead.
The Pioneers got on the board with 10:25 remaining in regulation as Moore was able to get a foot on a loose ball in the Bryant penalty box and found the back of the net for SHU. Sacred Heart would not be able to get any closer as the Bulldogs held off the Pioneers for the 3-1 win.
The women's soccer team returns to action next Friday as they travel to Wagner in a Northeast Conference match-up. Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
