FAIRFIELD, CT (October 7, 2005) - The Sacred Heart women's soccer team scored three times in the second half, two by senior Katie Leahy (Warwick, RI), to come away with a 3-0 win over visiting Quinnipiac University Friday afternoon in Northeast Conference play. The Pioneers improve to 2-0-0 in the league and even their record at 5-5-0 overall. The Bobcats fall to 5-6-2 and 1-2-0 in the NEC with the loss.
The Bobcats would come up with the first solid scoring opportunity, just five minutes in as senior Leandra Price collected a loose ball 10 yards out but her shot sailed high. From there it was all Sacred Heart as the Pioneers dominated the game on the offensive end, out shooting Quinnipiac 20-4 while Pioneer goalkeeper Ashley Mocarski (Stratford, CT) needed to make just two saves to preserve her second shutout of the season.
The score remained scoreless over the first 45 minutes despite several solid scoring opportunities for Sacred Heart. The Pioneers thought they cracked the scoreboard in the 12th minute when Leahy put away a rebound off but was called offside and the goal was disallowed. SHU was knocking on the door once again in the 23rd minute when senior Orlagh Cullen (Offlay, Ireland) sent a direct kick over the top of the defense from 30 yards out where Leahy got her head on the ball but her shot missed just wide.
Cullen showed off her heavy foot just five minutes later when she blasted a shot off the right post after collecting a loose ball 15 yards out. Quinnipiac had a great chance to get on the board fall to the way side in the 42nd minute when Brittany Lockwood collected an errant pass and had clear green between herself and the SHU keeper. Lockwood got off a shot but right into the hands of the waiting Mocarski and the two teams ended the half deadlocked.
The Pioneers kept the offensive pressure constant in the second half and finally broke through in the 56th minute. SHU was awarded a free kick from the 30 yard marker after Quinnipiac's Kate Kissfelt was given a yellow card for a take down just past midfield. Cullen blasted a shot toward the left post where Leahy was waiting to leap in the air and redirect the ball past QU keeper Annette van der Weijden.
Cullen helped give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead in the 75th minute when SHU was awarded a corner kick. The senior co-captain sent the ball out front where junior Leslie Morales (Cortlandt Manor, NY) one-timed it over to junior co-captain Lisa Burbige (Babylon, NY) who blasted a shot into the right corner of the net.
Sacred Heart finished off the scoring in the 86th minute when Leahy battled her way through a pair of Quinnipiac defenders to collect a loose ball at midfield. Leahy gained control and streaked in past the QU defense. The QU keeper came out to try and make a play but Leahy used a quick move to the left to sneak past the goalie and deposit her shot in the back of the net for her fourth goal of the year.
Leahy now owns two game-winning goals on the year while Cullen collected two assists for her first multi-point game of 2005. For Quinnipiac, van der Weijden mad six saves in goal.
The Pioneers return to the field this Sunday, October 9th when they host three-time defending NEC champion Central Connecticut at 12 noon. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
