Sacred Heart senior Erica Rico (Cranston, RI) scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Pioneer women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Stetson University at the Stony Brook Holiday Inn Express Tournament Sunday afternoon. SHU spilt the pair of games at SBU over the weekend to finish second at the tournament and are now 2-4 on the season.
The Pioneers first goal came just two minutes and 53 seconds into play as Stetson gave Sacred Heart a 1-0 advantage on an own goal. Rico blasted a shot that deflected off a Hatter defender and into the back of the net.
The senior midfielder scored her second goal of the game in the 33rd minute when she redirected a free kick off the foot of sophomore Alyssa Long (Smithfield, RI) for her third goal of the weekend.
Junior goalkeeper Ashley Mocarski (Stratford, CT) made two saves in the first half to preserve a 2-0 lead into the break. SHU out shot Stetson, 8-4 in the half and forced April Eilering to make all four of her saves over the first 90 minutes.
It didn't take long for Rico to create another scoring opportunity in the second half when she set up junior captain Lisa Burbige (Babylon, NY) for her fourth goal of the season. Rico and Burbige hooked up at 51:51 to give the Pioneers all they would need on the way to a 3-0 victory.
Mocarski added three more saves to her total to earn her first shutout of the season and improve to 2-4-0. The Pioneers finished the day out shooting the Hatters, 13-8.
In the final match of the day, the Stony Brook Seawolves claimed the tournament crown with a 2-0 win over St. Francis (PA).
Sacred Heart will return to the pitch on Tuesday night when they travel up-state to visit the Hawks of the University of Hartford. Kick-off is slated for 7 pm.
