HAMILTON, N.Y. (September 15, 2006) - The Pioneer women's soccer team got an own goal in the 46th minute Friday night but couldn't make it stand up as the Colgate Raiders netted a pair midway through the second half to come away 2-1 winner at Van Doran Field. SHU falls to 0-7-0 on the year while Colgate jumps out to a 5-1-0 start to 2006.
The own goal marks the first points of the season for Sacred Heart but no Pioneer player has yet to find the back of the net. SHU was out shot 24-2 in the game while never forcing Colgate netminder, Carly Sousa to make a save.
The two teams played a scoreless first half but with just 1:48 gone in the second, the Pioneers were able to get their first goal of the season when a corner kick by Lisa Burbige sailed into the box where a Raider misplayed a header and knocked it into her own net.
The Raiders atoned for their miscue with two goals just under five minutes apart. Kelly Kuss got Colgate on the board and tied the score in the 57th minute when she collected a centering pass from Josie Johnson at the 30-yard mark and fired past the keeper on the right to tie it at 1-1.
Franny Iacuzzi provided the game-winner at the 62:47 mark when buried a pass from Jamie Dennison right in front, uncontested.
SHU goalkeeper Ashley Mocarski (Stamford, CT) played all 90 minutes and made eight saves, four in each half.
The Pioneers will wrap up an eight game road stretch on Sunday afternoon taking on Brown. SHU will make their home debut next weekend hosting Holy Cross and Maine.
