FAIRFIELD, CT (September 12, 2004) - The Sacred Heart women's soccer team lost their 2004 home opener Sunday afternoon, falling to the Northeastern Huskies, 2-0, on Campus Field. The Pioneers fall to 1-4-0 on the year with the loss while Northeastern improves to 4-1-0.
SHU struggled again offensively, managing just six shots on the day. Northeastern fired only eight shots toward goal, but made theirs count burying two in the back of the net. The Huskies got on the board late in the first half after a foul was called on SHU's Jasmine Urbas (Pickering, Ontairo), giving NU a direct kick from about 15 yards out. Junior Jessica Pfeifer made it count sailing her shot into the top left corner past the outstretched hands of SHU goalie Ashley Mocarski (Stratford, CT).
Northeastern opened the second half in similar fashion, striking early to put the game out of reach. Junior Filippa Petruccelli fed fellow junior Jessie Haidamaka who promptly deposited her shot in the top left corner also for a 2-0 Huskie advantage.
The Pioneers forced goalie Mariel Wilner to make just three saves to earn the shutout victory. SHU's Mocarski made just one save on the afternoon in taking the loss.
Sacred Heart will next be in action this Friday, September 17th when they face Siena College in the University at Albany Tournament. The Pioneers will take on the host Great Danes on Sunday, September 19th in the second round of the tournament.
