Sept. 10, 2006
QUEENS, N.Y. - (September 10, 2006) The St. John's women's soccer team converted a second half penalty kick to post a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon on the final day of the NYC Nike Classic. Red Storm senior midfielder Erin Bohn converted a penalty kick in the 79th minute to give St. John's its fourth shutout victory of the year and drop the Pioneers to 0-6-0 to start the season.
Sacred Heart sophomore Janice Rodriguez (Clinton, CT) was named to the NYC Nike Classic All-Tournament team.
St. John's finished in second place at the tournament, behind champion Fordham. Both the Rams and the Red Storm had two victories for six points, but Fordham edged St. John's in the goal differential tiebreaker and therefore took the tournament title. Columbia finished in third place, followed by Sacred Heart.
St. John's earned its penalty kick after a Sacred Heart handball in the penalty box was called in the 78th minute. Bohn stepped up and struck the ball hard to the upper right corner of the goal to put St. John's up for good, 1-0.
Jaime Beran finished with a save for her second-consecutive shutout. St. John's, 4-0-1, out-shot Sacred Heart, 14-2, and held a 2-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Ashley Mocarski (Stratford, CT) stood out for the Pioneers in goal, as she stopped six Red Storm shots and had several acrobatic saves throughout the game.
