The Sacred Heart women's soccer team struck first Friday night but it was the Northeastern University Huskies who would score last, coming back to post a 2-1 win over the Pioneers. SHU falls to 1-3-0 on the year with the loss while the Huskies evened their record at 2-2-0.
The Pioneers grabbed the early lead with a goal by junior Lisa Burbige (Babylon, NY) in the 40th minute of play. Burbige settled a pass from teammate Erica Rico (Cranston, RI) and fired a shot into the top right corner.
Northeastern Defenseman Laura Johnson tied it up just four minutes later with her first goal of the season. Freshman forward Hanna Olsson was credited with the assist as her corner kick set up Johnson's goal taking the game into the half tied, 1-1.
The two teams remained deadlocked until the 73rd minute when NU's Kristin Kowalik's provided the game winner. Kowalik collected a breakaway pass from teammate Jackie Spellman and slid the ball past an oncoming Ashley Mocarski (Stratford, CT) in SHU"s goal to give the Huskies the go ahead goal.
The game was an intensely physical contest as the two teams had a combined 34 fouls. In a primarily defensive contest, Sacred Heart held a slim advantage on shots over NU 11 to 10.
Sacred Heart returns to action next weekend when they take part in the Stony Brook Tournament. SHU will face the host Seawolves on Friday afternoon and come back on Sunday to face Stetson.
