Pioneers use Three First Half Goals en route to their first win of 2005
Sept. 4, 2005
PROVIDENCE, RI - (September 4, 2005) - The Sacred Heart women's soccer team scored three times in the first half of Sunday's game at Brown University to pace themselves to a 4-3 victory over the Bears and earn their first victory of 2005. SHU junior Lisa Burbige (Babylon, NY) led the way with a pair of goals as the Pioneers now stand at 1-2 to start the year. Brown falls to 0-2.
Both teams came into Sunday's affair searching their first win and first goal of the 2005 season, and the Pioneers would be the first to strike. SHU opened the scoring at 18:09 of the first half when Burbige banked her shot off the right post and into the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers kept the offensive pressure, increasing their lead to 2-0 just 6:25 later when Burbige fired a rocket past Brown keeper Hilary Wilson off a feed from senior Erica Rico (Cranston, RI). Sacred Heart looked as if they would run away and hide, adding one more tally before the end of the first half as freshman Britney Dupee (Portland, ME) recorded her first career goal.
Dupee scored off a pass from senior midfielder Orlagh Cullen (Offlay, Ireland) to send SHU into the break leading 3-0. The Pioneers out shot Brown, 12-3, over the first 456 minutes.
The Bears wasted little time in waking up from their first half hibernation, tickling the twine less than three minutes into play. Senior Meghan Schreck was taken down in the box, setting up a Brown penalty kick. Senior Kim LaVere placed the ball into the far corner of the net to bring Brown to within two, 3-1, at 47:20.
Just 42 seconds later, freshman Emily Geldwert scored her first career goal to bring the Bears to within one. Junior Jill Mansfield used a long throw-in from behind the 50 to set up Schreck on the right sideline. Schreck crossed to Geldwert and she tapped the ball into the opposite corner, closing the gap to 3-2.
The Pioneers would bounce their cushion back to two goals in the 63rd minute when senior Katie Leahy (Warwick, RI) scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal, heading the ball over Wilson off a Sacred Heart direct kick.
Brown junior Kathryn Moos scored the Bears' third goal at 72:12 but that would be as close as they would get Sunday afternoon with SHU tightening up defensively down the stretch for a 4-3 win. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Mocarski (Stratford, CT) need only make two saves to earn the victory in net for the Pioneers.
SHU returns to action on Friday, September 9th when they travel to Boston, Massachusetts to face the Northeastern Huskies in 6 pm start.
