Fairfield, CT – Sacred Heart earned its first victory of the 2009 season with a 2-0 triumph over Longwood Sunday afternoon at Campus Field. Freshman Jen Mulvey (Manalapan, NJ) put the Pioneers ahead 15 minutes into the game with the first goal of her collegiate career. Amanda Stiles (Miller Place, NY) found the net two minutes later off of a SHU corner kick. Samantha Kee (Haskell, NJ) notched an assist on both of the Pioneer markers.
Sacred Heart (1-1-0) dodged an early bullet five minutes into the game as Lancer forward Alex Myers could not shoot on an open net after a great through ball from Jessica Varela. The Pioneers would score at the 15:34 mark as Mulvey headed in a cross from Kee to give Sacred Heart the early 1-0 advantage. SHU wasted little time before striking again as they scored from set pieces on a corner kick taken from Leigh Dogmantis (Walnutport, PA). Kee’s header from the cross hit the post but Stiles corralled the rebound and blasted it into the open goal to extend the Pioneer lead to 2-0.
Longwood (0-2-0) almost conceded a third goal in the first half with just over nine minutes remaining. Heather Quevillion (Dayville, CT) ripped a shot from just inside the penalty box after another Sacred Heart corner kick. But the Lancers escaped as Halie Romasco, covering the near post on the corner, was able to make the defensive save and keep the ball from finding the back of the net.
The Pioneers continued to pressure the Lancers in the second half and almost scored on another set piece play from an Ashley Testani (Monroe, CT) free kick. Longwood would have its best scoring chance with 9:30 to play as a SHU foul led to a free kick just outside the 18 yard box. Kacie Oliver’s shot would sail high and the Pioneers would cruise in for the 2-0 victory.
Meghan Reichelt (Selden, NY) made three saves as she earned her first clean sheet of the season. The Pioneers return to action Friday, September 4 as they travel to Lawrenceville, NJ to take on Rider at 4:00 pm.
