ORONO, Maine -- Senior Linda Consolante scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Maine women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Sacred Heart in the season-opener for both teams. Laura Harper and Heather Hathorn also tallied goals for the Black Bears, while keeper Tanya Adorno notched her 21st career shutout.
Maine got on the board just 3:54 into the contest. After a Pioneer foul, Maine was awarded a direct kick just outside the 18-yard penalty box. Consolante took the kick and rifled a shot just under the crossbar and out of the reach of SHU keeper Ashley Mocarski (Stratford, CT).
Sacred Heart nearly tied the game in the 19th minute, but had a shot by senior Erica Rico (Cranston, RI) hit the post.
Maine added to its lead later in the half. Hathorn found Haper alone in front of the goal and fed her a perfect pass. Harper beat Mocarski to give Maine a 2-0 lead. The Black Bears took that lead into halftime.
Consolante stuck again just over 15 minutes into the second half. Maine was awarded a corner kick and Marie-Michele Bouchard kicked a perfect ball to Consolante who was in the middle of the box. Consolante headed the ball past Mocarski.
Maine rounded out the scoring less than nine minutes later. Hathorn dribbled in alone and beat Mocarski with a blast inside the penalty box.
Maine keeper Tanya Adorno made three saves in goal for the Black Bears. Mocarski stopped eight shots for the Pioneers.
SHU will return to action one week from today when they travel to Boston College for a 7 pm start.
