Final Stats

ORONO, ME - Junior Laura Martel scored a natural hat trick with three goals in the first half to lead the University of Maine women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over visiting Sacred Heart University in the opening game for both teams on Saturday.

Martel got things rolling for the Black Bears just 6:10 into the game on a breakaway off a header from Kim Stephenson. She made it 2-0 just over three minutes later when she knocked home the ball after a shot by Carolyn Nellis his the crossbar. Kelsey Wilson helped Martel complete the hat trick with a one-touch pass that Martel banged to the right of sophonmore SHU goalie Meghan Reichelt (Selden, NY).

Alex Mack (Freeport, ME), playing in her home state, had one of the three Pioneer shots on goal. Senior Janice Rodriguez (Clinton, CT) and sophomore Leigh Dogmanits (Walnutport, PA) had the others.

Reichelt finished the game with six saves for the Pioneers. Senior Jasmine Phillips made three saves for Maine.
