Pioneers dominate second half shots battle while Vermont slips by to win 1-0

FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's soccer team (0-7-0 overall, 0-0 NEC) fell to Vermont (1-4-1 overall, 0-0 American East) by a score of 1-0 this afternoon. The team returns to action on Wednesday Sept. 12 when they travel to Jersey City to face Saint Peter's. Game-time is set for 1:00 p.m. 

Vermont would begin to fire shots early in the first half as Aly Spence would take a shot at 2:07 that was blocked by the SHU defense. SHU would fire back as Danielle Karpiej and Kylie Roberts would each fire shots seconds between each other one at 7:18 and the other at 7:29 but the shots were either saved or blocked. Then at 8:26, Vermont would sneak a shot passed the goalie courtesy of Ella Bankert to put the Catamounts ahead 1-0. Vermont would edge the Pioneers in first half shots by a margin of eight to six in favor of Vermont. In the closing minutes of the first half Taylor Casale would launch a pair of shots but each would be blocked keeping the score at 1-0 at the end of the half. 

SHU would get more aggressive in the second half as the Pioneers would fire off four shots in the first three minutes each by a different SHU player. Lindsay Savko had the closest shot of the four to reach the goal but it was just narrowly saved by the goalie at 50:05 to keep the score 1-0 in favor of the Catamounts. While SHU dominated the second half in shots 16 to eight, the Catamounts would edge victorious as their defense held on to keep the score 1-0 in favor of Vermont.
