Late scoring by River Hawks pushes UMASS Lowell to 3-0 victory over Pioneers

FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's soccer team (0-5-0 overall, 0-0 NEC) fell to UMASS Lowell (1-3-2 overall, 0-0 American East) by a score of 3-0 this afternoon. The team returns to action on Friday, Sept. 7 when they host Columbia. Game-time is set for 3:00 p.m.

UMASS Lowell would start attempting shots early as they took a shot in the early minutes of the game at :18 but the shot went high over the post. Then in the second minute at 2:55 the River Hawks would continue their strong attack as they would fire off two more shots one at 2:55 that was blocked and the other at 3:11 that went wide right. UMASS Lowell would outshoot SHU in the first half 11 to four but neither side would be able to find the net in the first half keeping the score at 0-0. 

In the second half, the Pioneers would be able to fire off three shots in a row first beginning with Lindsay Savko at 58:29 but her shot would go wide. Then at 60:20, Danielle Karpiej would attempt a shot on goal but it would be saved right before Savko again would attempt another shot this time at 60:39 but it would be saved. It wouldn't be until 64:49 when the River Hawks would score the first points of the game to give UMASS Lowell a 1-0 lead. The River Hawks would tack on two more goals before the close of the game to make the final score 3-0. 

Notes: 

First Half 

  • UMASS Lowell would outshoot SHU in the first half 11 to four 
  • Nicole Sambuco recorded three saves in the first half
  • The Pioneers led in corner kicks 3-0.

Second Half

  • Pioneers would be able to fire off three shots in a row first beginning with Lindsay Savko at 58:29 but her shot would go wide. 
  • Sambuco would come up with three saves in the second half
  • It wouldn't be until 64:49 when the River Hawks would score the first points of the game to give UMASS Lowell a 1-0 lead.
  • The River Hawks would tack on two more goals before the close of the game to make the final score 3-0.
