FAIRFIELD, Conn – Sacred Heart Women's Soccer Head Coach Kim Banner announced seniors, Jillian Picinich (Bellmore, NY), Kristin Verrette (Saugus, MA), and Talia Schwartz (Roslyn, NY), as captains for the upcoming 2014 season.
Verrette, entering her second season as team captain, has been one of the Pioneers most consistent players over her three years in Fairfield, leading Sacred Heart in total points the last two seasons. Last season, she led the team with four assists and tied a team-high with five goals. Also last year, Verette was twice named NEC Player of the Week. As a sophomore, she racked up ten points, scoring game-winning goals in wins over Monmouth and Robert Morris. She will begin this season with 26 total points to her name, ranking seventh all-time in SHU history.
"Kristin is one the most talented players we have had here at Sacred Heart," said Head Coach Kim Banner. "She is driven to be the best player she can be, and in her second year as team captain I expect her to really blossom."
Picinich has been a main-stay in the midfield over her three seasons, starting in 49 of 52 career games. Last season, she started in all 18 games for the Pioneers, scoring two goals. The middie has ten career points, including three goals.
"Jillian is a three-year starter at midfield for us and is one of the most consistent players we have," said Coach Banner. " Her positive attitude and commitment will help bring this team to the next level."
The final captain, Talia Schwartz, is expected to be the starting goalkeeper next season, after spending three years behind Sydney Judkins. The senior-to-be has been a three year member of the Pioneers, appearing in 11 career games. She holds a 4-3 career record with 28 saves.
"Talia is an extremely hardworking person and a true role model for our players. I expect her to have a great role in leading the team to new heights next year," said Coach Banner.
