FAIRFIELD, Conn – Sophomore Corina DaSilva (Brookfield, CT) scored in the 83rd minute to deliver the Sacred Heart Pioneers a 2-1 conference victory over Mount St. Mary's Friday night on Campus Field. It is the Pioneers third 2-1 win this season, and it's ninth game this season decided by just one goal. SHU improves their conference record to 2-2 this season.
In a mostly Sacred Heart controlled first half, SHU had the greatest scoring chance with junior captain Kristin Verrette (Saugus, MA) turning and striking a shot off the post with about eight minutes left in the half.
As she has done all season, Verrette kept attacking in the second half and put the Pioneers on the board in 54th minute, scoring her fifth goal of the season to give SHU a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Dana Cosmedy (Monroe, CT) found an open Verrette in the middle of the field to earn her second assist of the season.
Mount St. Mary's fought back to tie the game in the 67th minute on a missile of a shot from Kate Murphy from about 25 yards out that flew into the top corner of the net, past a diving Sydney Judkins (South Park, PA).
With the game tied up once again, it was the Pioneers who struck last with Dasilva heading home a ball to give SHU a 2-1 lead in the 83rd minute. Verrette was once again in on the action, assisting DaSilva with a header of her own that DaSilva tracked down and knocked in the back of the net past a sprawling Vicky Cocozza.
In Sacred Heart's past two victories Verrette has a combined five points, and now leads the team with 14 points and five goals.
Sacred Heart looks for three wins in a row on Sunday afternoon when they play host to the Blackbirds of LIU Brooklyn.
