Fairfield, CT – The Sacred Heart women's soccer team scored two goals in the first half Friday night, en route to a 2-1 victory over the Yale Bulldogs in New Haven. Junior captain Kristin Verrette (Saugus, MA) recorded a goal and an assist as SHU improves to 3-5 on the season.
Sophomore forward Dana Cosmedy (Monroe, CT) put Sacred Heart on the board in the 19th minute of the game, knocking home a rebound to put SHU up 1-0. Verrette created the opportunity with a shot from the outside that was initially saved but not corralled by Yale goalkeeper Elise Wilcox. The goal was Cosmedy's first of the season after scoring four last season as a freshman.
Verrette struck again for the Pioneers in the 45th minute of the first, this time putting a goal home to give SHU the 2-0 lead. Verrette has a team high nine points this season and has scored the game-winning goal in all of SHU's victories this season.
Yale cut into the Sacred Heart lead in the 80th minute on a nice outside from 25 yards out that snuck just underneath the crossbar.
The Pioneers look for three wins in a row on Sunday afternoon when they travel to take on the Brown Bears at 1:00 pm.
