Rugby Advances to Tier II Championships For First Time In Program History

FAIRFIELD, Conn.- For the first time in program history, the Sacred Heart University Women's Rugby team will be advancing to the NIRA Tier II Championships which will be played on Saturday, Nov. 10 against Mount Saint Mary's. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

"I am proud of this team and the individuals who have help us on our path to the Tier II Cup Championship this coming Saturday. It has been a team effort on all ends to accomplish this goal that we set in our first team meeting this fall. From the coaching staff Jenn Salomon and Lindsey Wise, to our athletic trainer, Corinne Lyons, and our strength coach, Lila Palmer it was everyone creating the right atmosphere to get here. It's not just sweat, tears, and hard work on the field, it's also discipline and accountability off the field. That is where we build our program." Head Coach Michelle Reed on the significance of making the Tier II Championships.

The Pioneers had a dominate fall season as SHU tallied a 5-2 record in Tier II play while tallying a 5-3 overall record. SHU's 28-0 win against Molloy that occurred on Oct. 27 was the victory that pushed the Pioneers to claim the second place slot behind Mount Saint Mary's.

"This weekend represents what we having been building the last 3.5 years. We have had big losses, great wins, and some hard lessons while developing a team that values more than just the wins. We are drawing the right student-athletes to our program confirming that we are right where we are supposed to be. We will continue to build a respected rugby program here at Sacred Heart."
