BATON ROUGE, La. – Sacred Heart Women's Rugby Head Coach, Michelle Reed, recently sat down with Gift-Time Rugby Network and shared thoughts on her program as well as the culture of women's rugby.
In a piece entitled "Sacred Heart University Women's Rugby – 'Earn Everything'", writer Reed Ronan uncovers Coach Reed's insight on the sport's history and delves into how it has since rendered her philosophy at the helm of the Pioneers' group.
Reed began with the foundational start of the Pioneers' program. "The NCAA DI Sacred Heart Women's Rugby program began in 2015. The administration decided to elevate the women's rugby club to varsity status creating the 32nd varsity program on campus. We had our first season in the fall of 2015 and since then we have improved tremendously."
Reed continued expressing milestones within her program. "In 2015, Emily Mignogni received our first All-American Award. In 2016, we had two All-American honorable mentions, Mignogni and Margaret Woods. We started an annual 7's home tournament this past spring inviting local clubs to play and SHU alumni to come back to campus and meet the new team. It was very successful and we won the Pioneers 7's Tournament for the first year. This season, we started off 2-0 and we currently sit at 3-2 for the season."
