Amanda Williams and Mary Montesarchio named WLax Captain

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (September 9, 2008) - Sacred Heart women's lacrosse head coach Laura Cook announced that seniors Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT) have been elected team captains for the 2009 season. The Pioneers also announced that they will play in three tournaments this fall as they get ready to defend their Northeast Conference Championship this spring.

Montesarchio, a team captain as well last season, is coming of her third-straight All-NEC season after earning first team honors last spring while leading SHU to their first-ever league title. She led the team in scoring last season scoring 58 total points on 20 goals and 38 assists. She also added 38 ground balls, 37 draw wins and 21 caused turnovers as the Pioneers finised with a school record 12 wins.

She set three new school records last season. Montesarchio's seven assist afternoon against Lafayette set a new Division I record for assists in a game. She also set new marks for assists in a season and career assists with her 38 assists blowing past the former mark the of 18. Heading into her senior season, Montesarchio leads all active Pioneers with 130 career points on 62 goals and 68 assists.

Williams had a break-out season in 2007, leading the team in goals scored with 45 and was second only to Montesarchio with 56 points. Her outstanding play on attack earned her a spot on the All-NEC second team last season. She was instrumental in the Pioneer's run to the NEC title and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Williams collected nine points over the two games to earn MVP and all-tournament team honors. In the 12-11 win over Monmouth, Williams tallied three goals and an assist with three draw wins and facing Quinnipiac in the Championship game with Quinnipiac, Williams totalled five points, scoring three goals and assisting on two, including the game-winner with three seconds left.

The duo will lead the Pioneers in this fall as SHU will take part in three tournaments. Sacred Heart will host their annual Alumni Game on Saturday, September 20th on Campus Field. The team will take part in the Hofstra Tournament on September 27th, the Holy Cross Tournament on October 5th and the Iona Tournament on October 18th.
