FAIRFIELD, Conn. (April 28, 2009) - Sacred Heart senior Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) was named to the WomensLacrosse.com Weekly Honor Roll announced on Monday. Montesarchio was named the Northeast Conference Tournament MVP after leading the Pioneers to their second-straight league title over the weekend.
Montesarchio collected seven total points, five ground balls, five draw wins and four caused turnovers as the top-seeded Pioneers defeated Monmouth and Quinnipiac to win the 2009 NEC Championship. The senior captain scored three goals and assisted on a pair while causing four turnovers, picking up three grounders and winning three draws to lead the Pioneers past the #4 seeded Hawks, 13-7, in the tournament semifinals. Montesarchio scored a pair while grabbing two grounders and two draws to help Sacred Heart defeat the #2 seed Quinnipiac in the championship game for the second time, 11-6.
On the season, Montesarchio has 55 points on 35 goals and 20 assists. She eclipsed the 30 goal mark for the first time in her career this season and was named All-NEC for the fourth times, earning first team honors for the third-straight season. In addition to her scoring, Montesarchio collected 35 ground balls, second on the team, along with 36 draw wins and 24 caused turnovers.
She will lead the Pioneers into action this weekend against the MAAC Champion Fairfield Stags in the NCAA Play-In Game. Gametime is scheduled for 3:00 pm at Fairfield University.
