March 23, 2009

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (March 23, 2009) - Sacred Heart senior Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) was named the Northeast Conference Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week announced Monday afternoon by the league office.

Montesarchio, a three-time all-NEC performer, tallied five goals, five assists, nine draw controls and three ground balls in Sacred Heart's 1-1 week. In a rematch of last year's NEC championship game, Montesarchio recorded three goals and assisted on another as the defending conference champion Pioneers rallied back from a three-goal deficit to claim a 9-8 win at Quinnipiac on Sunday. She assisted on Sacred Heart's first goal of day and buried her first marker just before the half to knot the game at 5-5. With her team down 7-5 in the second stanza, Montesarchio scored back-to-back goals in a three-minute span to tie the game at 7-7 and spark a 4-0 run that gave the Pioneers the lead for good. Earlier in the week, Montesarchio finished with two goals, four assists and five draw controls in a 16-11 setback at Fairfield. The Cortlandt Manor, NY native is the fifth-leading point producer in the NEC (3.00 ppg) and also ranks fourth in draw controls (2.86 per game) and sixth in assists (1.14 apg).

The senior co-captain leads the Pioneers back into action on Tuesday afternoon when SHU heads to Lafayette before returning home this weekend for a pair of games against Long Island and Bryant.
