SHU's Williams and Wagner Earn NEC Lacrosse Awards

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (March 9, 2009) - Sacred Heart's Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT) and Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) were named the Northeast Conference Women's Lacrosse Player and Defensive Player of the Week announced on Monday.

Williams recorded eight goals on 12 shots and added three ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover for the Pioneers last week. The senior attacker led Sacred Heart to its first win of the season on Wednesday, scoring a career-high six goals on just seven shots in a 10-9 triumph over Iona. She hit twice on eight meter attempts and provided the winning margin on a goal with 11:24 to play. Williams tacked on two more goals, including one from eight meters, and added a ground ball, draw control and caused turnover in an 11-9 setback at LeMoyne on Saturday. Williams, who hails from Monroe, CT and is a two-time all-NEC performer, currently leads Sacred Heart with eight goals and nine points. She ranks third in the league in goals per game (2.67) and fourth in points per game (3.00).

Wagner was outstanding in goal for the Pioneers, posting a .608 save percentage and 10.00 goals against average in a 1-1 week. The junior keeper turned back 17 shots in a 10-9 win over Iona on Wednesday. Her biggest save came with 4:54 left on the clock, which enabled Sacred Heart to hold the ball for the remainder of the contest to preserve its first win of the year. In Saturday's 11-9 loss at LeMoyne, the Aurora, CO product stopped 14 shots and claimed two ground balls. Through three matches, Wagner leads the NEC with a 10.00 goals against average and .600 save percentage, while ranking second with 15.00 saves per game.
