VILLANOVA, Pa. (March 21, 2006) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team got three goals from sophomore Elizabeth Ottey (Baltimore, MD) but a second half come back fell short as the Pioneers lost an 8-5 decision at Villanova Wednesday evening. The Pioneers fall to 0-7 to start the year and head into Northeast Conference play this weekend.
The Wildcats struck first but scores by Elizabeth Fritz (Harwood, MD) and Ottey gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead just over 14 minutes into the game. It would be SHU's lone lead of the game as Villanova mounted a four-goal run over the final 15 mintues of the first half to lead 5-2 at the break.
Becky Gardner scored twice on the run, sandwiched around scores from Cindy Koza and Katelyn Stone. The kept the run alive into the second stanza as Kathleen Kelly made it 6-2 just over eight minutes in.
SHU cut it to 6-4 on a free-position goal by Ottey and an Emily Tully (South Windsor, CT) marker mid way through the second. Villanova ended any Pioneer hopes of a comeback with back-to-back scores from Stevie McFadden and Gardner pushed the lead back to four with just over five minutes to play.
Ottey added her third with 1:41 to play to produce the final 8-5 score.
In addition to Ottey's three scores, junior Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) passed out two assists.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, March 26th when they travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. to face Long Island at 5:00 pm.
