STONY BROOK, N.Y. (March 12, 2008) - The Sacred Heart Pioneers got three goals from junior captain Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) but couldn't overcome a quick Stony Brook start en route to an 18-11 loss Wednesday afternoon. The Seawolves burst out to a 5-0 lead in the game's first eight minutes of action and pulled away late, using a 4-1 run over the last five minutes to secure their third win on the year.
SBU junior Jenna Celano and freshman Melissa Cook each had four goals to lead the Seawolves. Cook got the Seawolves on the board in a hurry, scoring just 46 seconds into the game. Following goals from senior Diana Caroleo and junior Amy Hallion, Celano scored back-to-back goals just 21 seconds apart.
The Pioneer answered with a three-goal spurt off the sticks of Montearchio and a pair from junior Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT). Stony Brook answered with three of its own before Montesarchio scored again but the Pioneers went to the locker room trailing 9-4. The Seawolves held a 22-7 advantage on shots over the first 30 minutes.
Senior Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD), back-to-back scores, and Harris helped the Pioneers get within 14-10 at 6:07 but three consecutive goals from Stony Brook put the game away.
The Pioneers return home on Saturday to play host to LeMoyne at 1:00 pm on Campus Field.
