March 3, 2010
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (March 3, 2010) - Sacred Heart senior Carissa Hauser (East Northport, NY) posted her second eight point game of the season on Wednesday afternoon, scoring five goals with three assists to lead the Pioneers past Iona College, 14-11. Senior goalkeeper Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) made 17 saves, 10 in the second half, to earn her first victory of the season as SHU evens their record at 2-2.
The Pioneers (2-2) dug themselves out of an 8-4 hole with a 10-1 run that featured four Hauser markers on the road to the win. Fellow seniors Jackie Pierce (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and Cori Horelik (South Windsor, CT) scored three goals with an assist each.
Hauser and Pierce put the Pioneers up 2-1 just over five minutes into the game before the Gaels took control over the next 16 minutes building their lead. Kasey Hughes and Casey Scully hit on back-to-back scores a minute apart to put Iona up 3-2 with 23:33 on the clock.
Pierce buried her second of the day off a feed from sophomore Alicia Fuchs (Bay Shore, NY) followed by a Horelik 8meter free position goal for a 4-3 Pioneer advantage with 20:17 left. The Gaels rattled off a 5-0 run with five different players finding the back of the cage for an 8-4 advantage with 8:40 left before the half.
Hauser helped swing the momentum SHU's way just before the half, scoring unassisted with 1:13 left in what proved to be the opening of the Pioneer rally. Out of the break, Horelik notched her second free position goal as SHU scored seven-straight to open the second half. Hauser hit on an 8meter attempt and buried a feed from sophomore Kate Kmiotek (Farmingville, NY). She also set up scores by Fuchs and Horelik on the run.
Fuchs put SHU up 12-8 at 15:41 before Elizabeth Coholan briefly halted the Pioneer offensive surge with a score 36 seconds later. The Pioneers left no room for a Gael comeback as Hauser tacked on her fifth and Pierce her thrid, off a feed from her fellow senior, to put SHU up 14-9 with just over five minutes left.
The Pioneers will take on the cross-town rival Fairfield Stags on Saturday afternoon in their 2010 home opener. Opening draw is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
