SHU's Shelby Vaccaro Named NEC Player of the Week
FAIRFIELD, CT ( March 25, 2013) - Sacred Heart junior Shelby Vaccaro (Brightwaters, NY) was named the Northeast Conference Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week on Monday after helping lead the Pioneers to wins over Quinnipiac and St. Mary's (Ca.) last week.
Vaccaro recorded 15 points in a span of two games last week, knocking down nine goals and assisting on six others as the Pioneers picked up back-to-back wins. She was instrumental in SHU's come-from-behind victory over Quinnipiac, scoring four goals and totaling five points as the Pioneers rallied from a 5-1 deficit to top the Bobcats 10-8. She then piled up 10 points – a feat that tied the Division I school record for most points in a game – with five goals and five assists in a 15-12 victory over St. Mary's (CA). More importantly, though, seven of her 10 points came in the second half, as she had a hand in seven of the eight scores. She also nabbed seven draw controls in the win. For the week, she averaged 7.5 points per game, 4.5 goals per game and 3.0 assists per game.
Vaccaro and the Pioneers are back in action with two NEC games this week at Central Connecticut and Bryant.
