Setting the Scene... Sacred Heart travels to Robert Morris University for two games this Friday and Saturday. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 pm for both games.
About Sacred Heart... The Pioneers enter this weekend with a record of 5-13-1. Junior forward Lauren Fontaine leads the team in scoring with 23 points, 13 goals and 10 assists. Classmate Brittany Hartman has scored nine goals and collected 10 assists, with a team-high three power play goals. Senior Kate Dunlop ranks third in scoring with six goals and nine assists. In between the pipes for the Pioneers, freshman Emily Siira has started 13 games and made 400saves, while owning a .862 save percentage.
Scouting the Colonials... RMU currently stands at 5-17-1 heading into this weekend’s contests. Sophomore Briana Delaney leads the team in scoring with 20 points, nine goals and 11 assists. Junior Sara O’Malley is the team’s leading goal scorer with 10 to go with eight assists. Classmate Daneca Butterfield has started 18 games in the cage and boasts a .904 save percentage and 3.05 GAA.
Last Time Out... The Pioneers were swept at Neumann University last weekend erupted. The Knights took game one 5-3 and game two 10-4. On Friday, Fontaine netted a pair of goals and adde an assist. In action on Saturday, she added another goal and assist. Sophomore Nicole Palazzo had three assists. She currently leads the team with 11.
Last Time They Met... Robert Morris swept Sacred Heart in Pittsburgh last February by scores of 7-2 and 12-0. Sophomore defender Caitlin Gottwald and Jaclyn Rideout netted the two Pioneer goals. Delaney combined four four goals and three assists in the two games. Earlier in the season SHU recorded its first victory over the Colonials in program history with a 4-3 victory at home. Sophomore Jamie Mey scored her first collegiate goal for the game winner. Amanda Nagel made 39 saves in net for the Pioneers.
Up Next... The Pioneers return home to host Williams College at the Wonderland of Ice at 7:00 pm on February 2.
Captains... Kate Dunlop, the team’s lone senior, was named the captain of the Pioneers by head coach Tom O’Malley during the preseason. Junior Lauren Fontaine was honored with the title of assistant captain prior to SHU’s weekend series at Robert Morris (January 22-23).
Home Cookin’... The Red & White beat Nichols to start a stretch of seven straight home games. So far the Pioneers are 3-2 on their home ice, plus a split series with Western Ontario and a 4-4 tie in an exhibition matchup with Robert Morris (IL). Last season, Sacred Heart went 7-6 at the Wonderland of Ice.
Nutmeg Classic... Yale hosted the annual Nutmeg Classic at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, CT on Thanksgiving weekend. In the first round, SHU lost the opening game to the host Bulldogs 10-1. Sophomore Sara Reddington registered the lone Pioneer goal. The University of Connecticut took down Quinnipiac 1-0 to advance to the finals. In the championship round, UConn beat Yale 6-1.
Life on the Road... Sacred Heart opened the season with a string of seven straight away games, plus an exhibition at Rhode Island. The Pioneers returned home after completing a 1-6 mark on the road. SHU lost the opening series of the season at Maine with losses of 9-0 and 11-4.
