Setting the Scene... Sacred Heart heads to Southern Maine for a 4:00 pm faceoff in its first road contest of 2010.
About Sacred Heart... The Pioneers enter today’s game with a record of 4-10-0. Junior forward Brittany Hartman leads the team in scoring with six goals and six assists. Classmates Lauren Fontaine and Taryn Lapierre rank second in points for the Pioneers. Fontaine has registered seven goals and four assists, while Lapierre has four goals and seven assists. In between the pipes for the Pioneers, freshman Emily Siira has started 11 games and made 323 saves, while owning a .861 save percentage.
Scouting the Huskies... Sophomore Danielle Ward leads the 2-7-1 Huskies with five goals and four assists, while classmage Katie Paradis ranks second with four goals and four assists. Fellow sophomore Kylie Blasen has registered a tema-high six goals and freshman Nanci Crossman has a team-leading six assists. Freshman Molly Passerini leads the way in goal with a 2.78 goals against average and .902 save percentage in six starts.
Last Time Out... SHU dropped its final contest of a seven game home stand to Lake Forest, Tuesday afternoon. The Foresters, ranked 10th in Division III, came from behind to defeat the Pioneers 7-5. Sacred Heart held a 4-1 advantage five minutes into the second period. Junior Kristina Hankins recorded a goal and an assist, while sophomore Jamie Mey netted a goal and a pair of assists.
Last Time The Met... Sacred Heart came away with a win and a tie at Southern Maine last season. In game one, Gina Arnone notched a hat trick, but was offset by Ward who netted three of her own in a 5-4 Pioneer victory. Blasen scored with one second remaining in the third to tie the game 4-4 in game two. Fontaine scored and assisted on one other for SHU.
Up Next... The Pioneers remain on the road for a weekend series at Bowdoin College. Game one will be Saturday January 9 at 7:00 pm, followed by game two, Sunday at 2:00 pm.
Home Cookin’... The Red & White beat Nichols to start a stretch of seven straight home games. So far the Pioneers are 3-2 on their home ice, plus a split series with Western Ontario and a 4-4 tie in an exhibition matchup with Robert Morris (IL). Last season, Sacred Heart went 7-6 at the Wonderland of Ice.
Nutmeg Classic... Yale hosted the annual Nutmeg Classic at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, CT on Thanksgiving weekend. In the first round, SHU lost the opening game to the host Bulldogs 10-1. Sophomore Sara Reddington registered the lone Pioneer goal. The University of Connecticut took down Quinnipiac 1-0 to advance to the finals. In the championship round, UConn beat Yale 6-1.
Life on the Road... Sacred Heart opened the season with a string of seven straight away games, plus an exhibition at Rhode Island. The Pioneers returned home after completing a 1-6 mark on the road. SHU lost the opening series of the season at Maine with losses of 9-0 and 11-4.
