New London, CT - Freshman Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) tallied two scores and freshman Kristina Hankins (Lexington, MA) added a goal and an assist to lead the Sacred Heart women's ice hockey team to a 5-1 win over Connecticut College Wednesday night.
After a scoreless first period, Caroline Jeffery put the hosts on the board just 47 seconds into the middle period, lifting one into the upper right portion of the net. Brigid O'Gorman and Kristen Van Slyke assisted on the tally.
But the Pioneers utilized their power play to score the next two goals in the second. Fontaine put in the equalizer with 8:50 remaining and Taryn Lapierre (Burilville, R.I.) netted the go ahead score and eventual game-winner with 7:14 to go. Kristina Feltz (Edison, N.J.) set up the score, playing the puck in from the left point. Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, N.J.) had the secondary assist and the visitors carried a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
Junior Katelin McLaughlin (Hingham, Mass.) added an insurance goal 3:49 into the third period and the Pioneers had a 3-1 advantage. Fontaine added her second score of the night with 11:19 remaining. The Pioneers added another score in the closing moments, closing out the 5-1 victory.
Sacred Heart senior net-minder Sarah Perry (Sudbury, MA) stopped 34 shots for the visitors. Sara Christopher had 29 saves for the Camels.
The Pioneers are back in action Friday night when they host St. Michael's. Face-off at the Wonderland of Ice is set for 7:00 pm.
