Pioneers Sink Lakers, 6-1

BRIDGEPORT, CT (December 4, 2009) – The Sacred Heart University women’s ice hockey team came away with a 6-1 victory over Oswego State at the Wonderland of Ice Friday night.  The Pioneers scored three times in the first period and never looked back.  SHU improved to 3-9 with the win, while the Lakers dropped to 4-4 on the season.

Junior Brittany Hartman (Prior Lake, MN) got the Pioneers on the board first as she put back a shot by senior Kate Dunlop (Flesherton, ON).  Sophomore Caitlin Gottwald (Reading, MA) netted the next SHU goal followed by a goal from junior Taryn Lapierre (Oakland, RI).

Lapierre finished the game with two goals and three assists.  Dunlop netted a goal and collected a pair of assists.  In the third period, sophomore Lauren Towers (West Hartford, CT) notched her third goal of the season on a power play.

Senior Jenna Kirkwood, assisted by junior Sarah Hannon and senior Angie Friesen, scored the lone goal for Oswego State.

Freshman Emily Siira (Cedarburg, WI) made 16 saves to preserve the second straight win for the Pioneers.  Sophomore Megan Amlinger stopped 32 shots in net for the Lakers.

The two teams meet again tomorrow for a 2:00 pm faceoff.
