NEW HAVEN, CT (November 27, 2009) – The Sacred Heart University women’s ice hockey team lost in the first round of the Nutmeg Classic at Ingalls Rink, 10-1 Saturday to host Yale University. The Bulldogs advance to face the winner of Quinnipiac vs. Connecticut, while the Pioneers await the loser of that game.
Yale got on the board first with a goal in the 13th minute with a goal by junior Bray Ketchum, assisted by sophomore Aleca Hughes. The Bulldogs would light the lamp once more before the end of the period as a shot by senior Caroline Murphy was saved by SHU goalie Emily Siira (Cedarburg, WI), but put back by sophomore Becky Mantell for the two goal advantage. Senior Alyssa Clarke picked up an assist on each goal.
The Pioneers power play struggles continued as they gave up a shorthanded goal to Murphy 1:34 into the second stanza. After two more Yale goals SHU failed to convert on another power play and were scored on by senior Berit Johnson, assisted by Murphy, near the midway point of the period.
Sacred Heart’s had a pair of scoring opportunities early in the third period as senior Kate Dunlop (Flesherton, ON) and junior Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) each had breakaways, but were stopped by Bulldog freshman goaltender Erin Callahan. The Pioneers would find the back of the net in the final minute of play, however. Sophomore Sara Reddington (Needham, MA) scored from in front of the Yale net off of assists from juniors Jackie Galvin (Canton, MA) and Jennifer Abramo (Briarcliff Manor, NY).
Junior Jackie Snikeris started between the pipes for Yale and made nine saves, while her replacement Callahan made 4 to preserve the win. For the Pioneers, Siira stopped 42 shots, but was pulled in the third for Raelene Sydor (St. Albert, AB) who posted 4 saves.
With the win the Bulldogs improved to 2-7-1 on the season, while SHU dropped to 1-8-0.
