MILFORD, CT - Sophomore Jessie Benoit (Essex, VT) slammed home her own rebound with 2:14 left in overtime to lift the University of Vermont women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart University in the season opener for both teams Friday evening.

Vermont took a 1-0 lead at the 11:11 mark of the first period on a goal by sophomore Gabrielle Worzella (Madison, CT) with assists from Stephanie Tewksbury and Jackie Durr. The Pioneers tied the game with just :32 left in the period on a power play goal by sophomore Michelle Panella from junior Jane Auxier and freshman Devon Gaslin.

The two teams played scoreless second and third periods, despite the fact that Vermont outshot the Pioneers a staggering 37-6 over forty minutes.

Vermont got all six shots in the overtime period, including the two at point blank range by Benoit that resulted in the game winner.

Senior Cami Cote made 13 saves in net for the Catamounts to gain the win, while sophomore Stephanie Boulay made 56 saves in the losing effort for the Pioneers.

Sacred Heart will be in action again on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. against Robert Morris University at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
