HAMDEN, CT (October 3, 2009) - The Sacred Heat University women's ice hockey team lost a 4-1 matchup with Quinnipiac University at the TD Bank Sports Center Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats took the win in their season opener, while the Pioneers drop to 0-3 on the season. Quinnipiac outshot Sacred Heart 41-21.
Freshman forward Breehan Polci struck first, on an assist from senior Evelina Husar, for Quinnipiac when her wrist shot hit the left post and found its way into the net with 4:38 left in the first period. Fellow freshman Heather Hughes followed with a power play goal with 2:22 remaining for the Bobcats as she rebounded the puck in front of the net and beat SHU freshman goaltender Emily Siira (Cedarburg, WI/Wisconsin Wild).
Sacred Heart senior forward Kate Dunlop (Flesherton, ON/Clearview Ice Stars), assisted by junior Brittany Hartman (Prior Lake, MN/Edina), cut the QU lead to 2-1 on a power play with 5:07 remaining in the second period.
Just 1:58 into the third period Quinnipiac freshman forward Brittany Lyons capitalized off a Sacred Heart turnover to put the Bobcats ahead 3-1. Sophomore Bethany Dymarczyk capped of the scoring with an empty net goal with five seconds left in the game.
In net for the Pioneers, Siira stopped 37 shots in the loss. Sophomore, and former SHU goaltender, Amanda Nagel started for Quinnipiac and made 10 save, while allowing one goal in just under 35 minutes played. Freshman Victoria Vigilanti made 10 saves in relief of Nagel.
The Pioneers return to the ice on Friday October 16 for a 7:00 pm faceoff at Union.
