BRIDGEPORT, CT (February 20, 2010) - Junior forward Brittany Hartman (Prior Lake, MN) registered a hat trick as she led the Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team to a 7-1 defeat of the University of Rhode Island. Sophomore Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, CT) also found the back of the net on two occasions.
Hartman netted the first goal of the contest midway through the first period off an assist from classmate Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON). The Pioneers closed out the period as Palazzo notched her first score on a power play.
Fontaine connected with Hartman 18 seconds into the second to push the SHU lead to 3-0. Hartman returned the favor midway through the period as she found Fontaine in front of the crease to hammer the shot home. Palazzo added her second goal of the day in a shorthanded situation with under three minutes to play in the stanza.
Sacred Heart outshot URI 43-17 for the game and scored twice on the power play and once shorthanded.
Sophomore Raelene Sydor (St. Albert, AB) stopped 16 shots to claim the win for the Pioneers. Freshman Megan McGhie made 36 saves as the Rams dropped to 16-8-3 on the season.
Next weekend the Pioneers will partake in the ECAC Open Tournament at Holy Cross on February 27 and 28.
