Bridgeport, CT - Freshman Kim Weiss scored the only goal of the game and Isable Iwachiw made 28 saves in goal to help preserve a 1-0 win for Trinity College over Sacred Heart in women's ice hockey action Friday night at the Wonderland of Ice.
Weiss's goal came with Trinity on the power play and 9:51 left in regulation. As a traffic jam ensued in front of the Pioneer net, Weiss was able to pound the loose puck into an open corner of the goal, past SHU netminder Sarah Perry (Sudbury, MA), for the deciding tally.
Sacred Heart's best scoring chances came on two separate breakaways. Late in the second period, freshman Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) got loose on a shorthanded break, but her shot went wide of the net. Then midway through the third, junior Jaclyn Rideout (Wilmington, MA) corralled a long pass and broke into the offensive zone, only to have her shot stonewalled by Iwachiw.
In a game that was very evenly played, the Pioneers held the slight advantage in shots, 28-27. Perry made 26 saves in the loss for SHU. The Pioneers were scorless in three chances on the power play while the Bantams were 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
The Pioneers are back in action Wednesday night when they host St. Anselm. Face-off at the Wonderland of Ice is set for 7:00 pm.
