Final Stats

Middletown, CT - Four different Wesleyan players scored goals as the Cardinals tallied four straight goals in the middle of the game as Wesleyan posted a 4-2 victory over Sacred Heart in women's ice hockey action Tuesday night at Spurrier-Snyder Arena.

The teams traded goals in the first period. The Pioneers got on the board just 13 seconds into the game when Wesleyan junior netminder Rachel Stemerman came out to the left circle to try and get the puck from Sacred Heart freshman Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON). Though Fontaine was knocked off stride, she got the puck in front of the Wesleyan goal where junior Whitney Dziama (Walpole, MA) shot it into a relatively open net as Stemerman was still out of position. With 7:43 left in the first, junior Emily Avener collected a loose puck in the Sacred Heart zone and moved in uncontested on goal, beating SHU netminder Sarah Perry (Sudbury, MA) with a backhand flip in close.

Wesleyan freshman Heather Lindgren put the Cardinals ahead 3:42 into the the second period by picking up a puck pushed into the right circle by junior Hannah Jackson and ripping off a shot past Perry. Wesleyan never lost the lead after that, padding the margin to 3-1 on senior Adrienne Shea's goal off a rebound of a shot by senior Amanda Nickels at 10:28 of the second stanza, just one second after the first penalty of the game to Sacred Heart expired.

The teams again traded goals in the third period with Wesleyan upping its margin to 4-1 with 7:49 left on the first career goal by freshman Julia Heffelfinger. Dziama netted her second of the game for the Pioneers with a redirect off a shot by freshman Brittany Hartman (Prior Lake, MN) in front with 4:36 to go.

Sacred Heart pulled Perry for the final 1:17 of the contest and kept constant pressure on the Cardinal net but could not erase the two-goal margin as Stemerman stopped 26 shots in the game to earn the win. Perry also made 26 saves in a losing effort.

The Pioneers travel to Rochester this weekend for a two game set with RIT. The teams meet Friday at 7:00 pm and Saturday at 2:00 pm at Ritter Arena.
