Jan. 16, 2010
ASTON, PA (January 15, 2010) – Neumann University put three shots in the back of the net during the first stanza on their way to a 5-3 defeat of the Sacred Heart University women’s ice hockey team. The Pioneers fell to 5-12-1 on the season, while the Knights improved to 6-6-1.
Junior forward Niki Blazenko scored the first goal of the contest just over 5:05 into the first off an assist from sophomore Diane Peters. Blazenko would set up the next two goals for Neumann, both scored by junior Jessica Schroeder.
SHU began to cut into the three goal deficit with a power play goal by junior Brittany Hartman (Prior Lake, MN), assisted by classmate Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON). Fontaine scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season to make it a one goal game 7:42 into the second frame.
Blazenko notched her second goal, which proved to be the game-winner, with less than two minutes remaining in the second period. She finished the game with two goals and two assists. Peters recorded three assists for the Knights.
In the third, Fontaine scored once more, but the Pioneer rally would fall short. Neumann senior Holly Williams put the game out of reach with a goal in the final minute of play.
Freshman Shannon Donnelly made 27 saves for the Knights for the victory. SHU sophomore Raelene Sydor (St. Albert, AB) made 27 stops in the loss.
