MILFORD, CT (January 15) - The Sacred Heart Pioneer women's ice hockey team (7-9-1) defeated the Castleton State Spartans (2-11-0) for the second consecutive day on the strength of a four-point performances by Michelle Panella and Sarah Turbert.
The Pioneers opened the scoring at the 11:04 mark in the first when Shannon Murphy finished a two-on-one break for the Pioneers, sending a pass from Panella into the net behind Spartan goalie Kalla Robb for the 1-0 lead. The Spartans would battle back, knotting the score at 1-1 just 1:10 later when Abby Greenbaum finished off Stephanie Purinton pass with a shot between the legs of SHU net minder Stephanie Boulay. Marie Nelson also picked up an assist on the play.
The Pioneers would answer with a two more goals before the period was out. The first came off the stick of Sarah Hickman at the 13:27 mark. Erin Barry led Hickman into the Castleton zone, Hickman then streaked down the right wing and sent a shot to the far side of goaltender Robb for the 2-1 lead. The final SHU goal of the period must have seemed like déjà vu for Panella and Murphy, as the two hooked up again on a two-on-one for the 3-1 lead.
The Pioneers would get the lead up to three in the second period when Panella would net her first of the game at the 18:29 mark. After taking a pass from Murphy she shot the puck from the near face-off circle, which kicked off a Spartan defender and past Robb. Devon Gaslin also picked up a helper on the goal.

The Pioneers started a wild five-goal third period, which also included a dozen penalties at the 10:04 mark. Barry took a feed from Hickman and fired a shot from the far circle over the shoulder of Robb for the fifth Pioneer goal of the game. Sarah Turbert would net the sixth SHU goal at the 11:42 mark before Panella added her second of the game at the 14:10 mark. Jessica Felt would strike at the 16:20 mark to close the book on the Pioneer scoring. Halley Grabarz would add a late power play goal for Castleton to cap the scoring.
Boulay made 17 saves in picking up the win, while Robb made 44 saves in taking the loss.
The Pioneers return to action on January 28, when they host Colby College at 4:00 PM at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
