MILFORD, CT (January 14) - Sophomore Michelle Panella scored three goals, including one short handed, and added an assist to lead the Sacred Heart Pioneers (6-9-1) past the Castleton State Spartans (2-10-0) in women's ice hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
SHU would jump out early and never look back, scoring just 20 seconds into the contest on the first of two Katelin McLaughlin goals, this one unassisted. The Pioneers would score twice more before the period would finish for a 3-0 lead. Laura Falk netted the second Pioneer goal at the 16:20 mark off a feed from Rachel Mroz. Panella would also net her first of the game in the first stanza at the 17:52 mark unassisted.
Panella would also account for the next to Pioneer goals jus 41 seconds apart forcing the Spartans to make a change in net. Her first goal of the period came short handed at the 5:03 mark off a feed from Sarah Turbert. The second came unassisted at the 5:44 mark. McLaughlin would add her second of the game at the 12:28 mark to close out the scoring in the second period.
Jessica Felt would notch the only goal of the third period with time ticking down to finish off a 7-0 Sacred Heart victory.
SHU goalie Stephanie Boulay made 16 stops to earn the shut out, while Rachel Dunn and Vanessa Carter both appeared the Spartans. Dunn started and made 22 saves on 27 shots in 25:44 before being replaced by Carter in the second period. Carter would finish the final 34:16 stopping 30 of 32 shots.
The Pioneers and Spartans lock up again Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM.
